Sheva Locke has spent over 35 years weaving together Jewish education and creative arts — as Head of School at Valley Beth Shalom Day School in Encino, California, and the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as Director of School Services at the BJE in San Francisco and the AJE in Detroit. Her practice draws on Handmade Midrash, the Jewish Studio Project, J.E.F.F. (Jewish Experiences for Families), a Family History Video Project she authored, and the Maayan Tefillah Retreat Program for Jewish Educators — co-led with Debbie Friedman and other nationally renowned Jewish educators. This journey shapes every Rimon Workshop she leads.
She has brought this text-and-art process into communal settings, schools, havurot, family camps, and home gatherings. Time and again, Sheva has seen firsthand how much can surface when people are given the opportunity to make something personal — watching the seeds of creativity bring joy and meaning, connecting deeply with each person's journey.
Rimon is the Hebrew word for pomegranate, a symbol of growth, creativity, and fruitfulness. Its sweet seeds are said to number 613 — the same as the mitzvot in the Torah — inspiring learning and partnership in creation through making and doing. As one of the seven species of Israel, the pomegranate also links us to the Land, our history, and heritage. Its abundance of seeds is a reminder that our own potential for creativity and connection is boundless.
